Tourist

Entrance

The rules for tourist visas in Bulgaria varies depending on the visitor’s nationality. However, here are some general guidelines:

Visa-free entry

Citizens of a country that is not part of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, will likely need a visa to enter Bulgaria for tourism. Citizens of certain countries, including the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan can enter Bulgaria without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This applies to tourist visits, business trips, and transit.

Visa requirements

Citizens of a country that requires a visa to enter Bulgaria, will need to apply for a tourist visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in the visitor’s home country. The application process typically involves submitting a visa application form, a valid passport, proof of travel arrangements, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means, and travel insurance. A visitor may also be required to attend an interview at the embassy or consulate. Visa processing typically takes 15 calendar days but can take up to 30 days or longer in some cases.

Important things to remember

The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay in Bulgaria.

The visitor must have sufficient funds to support him or her self during the stay in Bulgaria.

The visitor must have travel insurance that covers medical expenses and repatriation.

The visitor must not pose a threat to public security or health.

Bulgaria is a Schengen member

As of January 1, 2025, Bulgaria is now a full member of the Schengen Area. This means that checks on persons at internal land borders have been lifted. The internal air and sea border controls between Bulgaria and the countries of the Schengen area were already lifted since March 31, 2024. This is a significant development for Bulgaria and for travelers to and from the country. This facilitates easier travel, trade, and tourism. Visitors who already hold a valid Schengen visa (Type C), can enter Bulgaria for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without the need for a separate Bulgarian visa.

European Travel Information and Authorization System

Starting from the first half of 2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be implemented. This system requires travelers from visa-exempt countries to obtain an electronic travel authorization before entering most European countries, including Bulgaria. The ETIAS authorization will be valid for short-term stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period and will be valid for three years or until the visitor’s passport expires, whichever comes first. The application process involves an online form and a fee of approximately €7. EU citizens do not need to apply for ETIAS to travel to other EU countries. ETIAS is designed for citizens of countries who can currently enter the Schengen Area without a visa. Since EU citizens already have the right to free movement within the EU, they are exempt from this requirement.

Types of Tourist Visas

Short-Stay Visa (Type C): Allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism purposes. The standard fee for a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) is €80 for adults and €40 for children aged 6–12. Children under 6 are usually exempt from fees. Fees may vary slightly depending on the embassy or consulate.

Long-Stay Visa (Type D): For stays longer than 90 days, but this is not typically used for tourism.
