The Varna Province


Varna Oblast

The Varna Province ( Varna Oblast) is one of 28 first-level administrative regions of Bulgaria, it is divided into 12 municipalities with the city of Varna as the administrative center. The Varna Province spans a total area of approximately 3,824 square kilometers, the region is located in northeastern Bulgaria and represents about 3.4% of Bulgaria's total territory.

The 12 municipalities of the Varna Province are:

The municipality of Varna is divided into five administrative districts (raioni), each with its unique characteristics and contributions to the city’s identity:

  • Odessos
  • Primorski
  • Mladost
  • Asparuhovo
  • Vladislav Varnenchik

The central area of Varna city is home to the iconic Sea Garden and the Varna Cathedral, a bustling hub of cultural and social life. Asparuhovo and Galata, across the Asparuhov Bridge, offer quieter neighborhoods with stunning sea views. The Primorski district stretches along the Black Sea, featuring beaches, resorts, and historical sites. Mladost and Vladislavovo are residential zones with modern amenities.

Pobiti Kamani, a natural phenomenon nearby, adds a prehistoric touch. Each area of Varna offers unique experiences, from urban vibrancy to serene coastal retreats. Varna is the third-largest city in Bulgaria, situated along the shores of the Black Sea, it serves as a major economic, cultural, and tourist hub. Known as the 'Marine Capital of Bulgaria,' it is distinguished by its strategic geographic position, rich history, and diverse landscape.

The city of Varna covers an area of about 238 square kilometers and has an elevation ranging from sea level to approximately 100 meters above sea level in its western and northern parts.

Odessos district

Location: Central district encompassing Varna’s historical and administrative core. A lively urban district with a mix of historic charm and modern amenities, attracting tourists and locals alike.

Key Features:

  • Historical and Cultural Hub: Home to the city's oldest areas, including the Roman Thermae and the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral.
  • Sea Garden (Primorski Park): A vast coastal park with gardens, walking paths, and cultural attractions.
  • Business and Administration: Houses municipal offices, banks, and corporate headquarters.

Primorski district

Location: Extends along the northern coastline of Varna. The most populous and vibrant quarter. A blend of residential luxury, educational significance, and natural beauty, making it a preferred area for both locals and visitors.

Key Features:

  • Residential and Tourist Appeal: Known for high-end residential areas and proximity to the resorts of St. Constantine and Helena and Golden Sands.
  • Contains many of the city's main attractions, including the Archaeological Museum, and the Opera House.
  • Universities and Institutions: Hosts key educational institutions like the Technical University of Varna.
  • Natural Attractions: Includes the northern part of the Sea Garden and beaches.

Mladost district

Location: Located West of the city center, primarily a residential district. A growing area focused on residential development, family amenities, and commercial activity.

  • Family-Friendly Neighborhoods: Known for apartment complexes, schools, and parks.
  • Commercial Zones: Features large shopping centers like Grand Mall Varna and Varna Mall.
  • Industrial Development: Includes parts of Varna's industrial zones.

Asparuhovo district

Location: Situated south of the Varna Lake, connected to the city center by the Asparuhov Bridge. A quieter district with a laid-back, suburban atmosphere and scenic views.

  • Community-Oriented: Predominantly residential with a close-knit community feel.

Vladislav Varnenchik district

Location: Located northwest of the city center, named after the Polish-Hungarian king Vladislav III Varnenchik. A residential area with historical significance, appealing to families and those seeking budget-friendly living.

  • Historical Significance: Features the Park-Museum of Military Friendship Vladislav Varnenchik, dedicated to the Battle of Varna (1444).
